Yoga for Beginners

Yoga is basically the uniting of the mind and body through meditation and movement and it is a great way to exercise without overstraining the body. It is a great way to stay in shape and tone and strengthen the body. Anyone can do yoga from young to old, beginners to advanced. If you are new to yoga here are a few tips on how to get started.

HOW TO START PRACTICING YOGA?

The first thing to do is to purchase a high quality yoga mat; this mat will be used for kneeling, lying down on, sitting and standing. A high quality mat is needed to protect the body from injury. A moderate mat can be purchased for about $30. The next step is to buy the right type of clothes, not too baggy or too tight. The best material is cotton or some other type of breathable fabric, Lycra or spandex is also good. Try on several outfits and see how they fit before making a final choice. A beginner may want to practice at home with a CD before actually going to a class.

Lose stubborn belly flab and tone up all over with this fast, easy plan

Yoga is a known stress buster, but it's also one of the most effective workouts for fighting stubborn fat stores, especially the ones that crop up after age 40. The reason: Studies show that it lowers levels of stress hormones and increases insulin sensitivity -- a signal to your body to burn food as fuel rather than store it as fat. The following workout will do just that while firming up your arms, legs, butt, and abs. Start now to see results in as little as 3 weeks.

Workout at a glance

What you need: A yoga mat or carpeted space

How to do it: Follow this routine at least 3 times a week, holding each move 1 time for 3 to 5 deep breaths, unless otherwise noted. Start with the Main Move for each exercise. If it's too difficult, do the Make It Easier variation. If it's not challenging enough, try the Make It Harder option.

For faster results: Hold each pose for 5 to 8 breaths and increase repetitions (where noted) by 2 or 3.

MAIN MOVE: Crescent (Firms abs, hips, and thighs)

Crescent

Stand with feet together, toes forward, and arms at sides. Inhale and raise arms overhead, reaching fingertips toward ceiling. Exhale, and bend forward from hips, bringing hands to floor (it's okay to bend knees). Inhale, and as you exhale, step right leg back into a lunge (left knee bent about 90 degrees, knee over ankle; right leg extended and on ball of foot). Inhale and raise arms overhead; gaze forward. Hold, then return to standing and repeat, stepping left leg back.

Make it Harder: From end position, inhale and arch torso, arms, and head backward, gazing at fingertips.

Make it Easier: Lower right knee to touch floor as you step back into a lunge, and rest hands on left thigh.

MAIN MOVE: Willow (Firms sides of abs)
Willow

Stand with feet together, arms at sides. Place sole of left foot on inside of right thigh, knee bent to side. Touch palms in front of chest for 2 breaths. On third inhale, extend arms up, fingertips toward ceiling. Exhale, and on the inhale, bend torso to left. Inhale and straighten. Repeat 3 to 5 times, pressing foot into thigh; switch sides.

Make it Easier: Keep left foot on calf or touch toes to floor for balance.

Make it Harder: Close eyes as you balance and bend.

MAIN MOVE: Rocking Boat (Firms abs and back)
Rocking Boat

Sit with knees bent, feet on floor, hands on thighs. With torso straight and head in line with body, lean back about 45 degrees, raising feet so calves are parallel to floor, toes pointed. On an inhale, extend arms and legs, keeping legs together. Exhale, and as you inhale, lower torso and legs 3 to 4 inches so body forms a wider V shape. Exhale and raise torso and legs. Repeat 3 to 5 times.

Make it Easier: Hold backs of thighs with hands and keep legs bent. Lower torso only.

Make it Harder: Once in the wider V position, extend arms overhead.

MAIN MOVE: Hover (Firms shoulders, arms, abs, and back)

Hover

Begin in push-up position on toes with arms straight, hands below shoulders, and body in line from head to heels. On an exhale, lower chest toward floor, bending elbows back, arms close to body, abs tight. Hold a few inches above floor.

Make it Easier: Begin on hands and knees and walk hands forward until body is in line from head to knees.

Make it Harder: While holding the hover, lift left leg 6 to 12 inches, pause, and lower. Do 3 to 5 times, then switch legs.

MAIN MOVE: Chair (Firms butt and thighs)

Chair

Stand with feet together, toes forward, arms at sides. Inhale and raise arms overhead, palms facing each other. Exhale and sit back about 45 degrees, keeping knees behind toes and abs tight to support back; gaze forward.

Make it Easier: Do the move with feet hip-distance apart, hands on thighs, and bend only about 30 degrees.

Make it Harder: After you sit back, lift heels off floor, balancing on balls of feet (knees will be in front of toes); gaze up at fingertips.

Weight loss hypnosis is an effective tool in helping us shed the pounds for a very good reason. This arises because we all have a natural ability to control our body fat. The ability is inbuilt in our brain and is part of the regulatory system (in the hypothalamus, which is the reptilian part of the brain) that determines our temperature, blood pressure and level of physical activity. For this reason the facts strongly point to mental processes as being the things that cause weight gain as well as ultimately give us the ability to become thin. This happens unconsciously, so we are generally unaware of it.

The truth is even more fascinating than this. For the mental processes regulating weight are in themselves influenced by what we eat, as well as physical factors that would appear completely unrelated. The implication of this can be serious when we try to diet however we attempt to do it. For instance weight loss hypnosis is most likely to fail not because of the hypnosis itself, but because of other hidden factors that block its effectiveness. Let me give you three examples of this:

1. Fructose: This is a kind of intensely sweet sugar manufactured from corn syrup. It does occur naturally but only in very small quantities in fruit such as apples and figs. When the human species evolved exposure to fructose was very limited and as a result the human digestive tract does not handle it in the same way to sucrose and glucose (which are the other kinds of simple sugars) but instead it is absorbed in the liver rather than the intestine. The result of this is that you tend not to notice the quantity of food that you are eating and instead remain hungry. The message that your intestine is filling never reaches the brain. The solution is to cut down on heavily sweetened ready prepared foods and soft fizzy drinks.

2. Thirst: Level of hydration and the need to drink occurs in the hypothalamus as well as the regulation of food intake. Though these use different systems they are closely related. The problem is that it is very easy for a kind of "cross wiring" of the two to occur in the brain. The result: you mistake the feeling of thirst as a sign of hunger. The solution is that if you are aiming to lose weight you should ensure that you also drink an adequate amount (ideally water). Curiously, there is also some evidence that lack of sex (sex is also regulated by the hypothalamus) can also be mistaken for lack of food in a similar way.

3. Lack of sleep: Scientists discovered that levels of two chemicals in the body alter following sleep loss. These are leptin -- the hormone that tells the brain how much fat you possess -- and ghrelin which signals emptiness of the stomach. By effectively tampering with these chemical levels the natural fat regulatory process in the brain is effectively working blind -- it is simply not correctly receiving the information it needs to ensure that you become or remain a satisfactory weight. The solution in this case is not as straightforward as the two previous examples. However, there are a number of basic measures that can assist sleeping including: not be too physically or mentally active for an hour or so before going to bed; going to bed at a regular time each night; and drinking a hot milky drink before you try to go to sleep. There are also methods such as hypnosis and self-hypnosis that may help.

In summary the regulation of body fat is, fundamentally, a mental process. For this reason hypnosis is a highly relevant tool to use for weight loss. In order to increase the probability of success certain basic steps are advisable as part of this program. These include reduction of fructose, ensuring a good level of hydration, and placing emphasis on good quality sleep.
Every day, more people come to the realization that the best way to lose fat is by heavy resistance training, which forces your body to build muscle. Building muscle takes time during resting, and burns massive amounts of energy, which will be called from stored fat - effectively meaning you will be burning fat all day long. This is a fact.

This article will deal with a wonderful way of tripling the results of the resistance training you have to be doing. As you may or may not know, in resistance training the sessions should be very short and infrequent - around 20 minutes per session and 2 to 3 sessions per week.

When you are resistance training in order to lose fat, you have to work smarter - you can't afford to be the simple Gym Guy or Girl. Here is where the trick comes in.

In most resistance training exercises, there are 3 stages of what you are doing. Let's say you are doing bicep curls with dumbbells or barbells. The 3 stages are:

Positive stage: While you are still lifting the weight.

Neutral stage: While you have lifted the weight maximally and are about to start lowering the weight.

Negative stage: The lowering of the weight.

Now, everyone focuses just on the lift and forgo the neutral and negative stages. In reality, those stages are VERY important - if you focus equally on those stages too, it will mean that every possible muscle fiber is being stressed; and new pathways to your muscles are being opened.
Simply focusing on these different stages will massively increase the benefit you will be getting from the same amount of exercising time.

More benefit = More muscle to be built at the same time = More fat to be burned at the same time... and this equals to, more fat burned while you are resting. Give this a try - you won't be disappointed...
